Mixed fortunes for Waverley Open teams

Tuesday night saw the fourth team in action against Watsonians away find this. They narrowly got beaten 3 ties to 2 with new member Andy Lapish showing his strength at number 1, a 3-1 victor and Martin Robertson chipping in with a hard fought 3-2 at number 5. John Allan struggled to get into the game at 4 taking only a solitary point, while Gary Loake managed a game at 3. At 2, Iain Clark had a bit too much for Neil Kempsell in the first game of the year.

Wednesday it was the turn of Waverley’s courts to have a ball hit in anger this season, with the 2nds running out 3-2 winners against Mamma’s Pizza. A useful 16 points to kick off the campaign, the highlight being an excellent first string match with Tom Facer taking on Neil Macallister and choosing to play “Set 1” at 8-8 in the fifth! Neil stole that point after coming back from 8-4 down to take a high quality game enjoyed by a large crowd of supporters and teammates! Bar that the team consisted of Rich Nettleton at 2 who admitted he had a bad night and would be better next time, Pete Cochrane with a great win at 3, Mike Read looking comfortable at 4 and now in his second year at the club after a long absence, former junior Luigi Pedreschi holding his own at 5 dropping only 5 points in the process!

The 1st team was up next, but with a late call off from one of our team, Pete Cochrane stepped in at 5 after a tough match only an hour or so earlier. Pete fought hard but went down 3-0 to a very talented Heriot Watt newcomer. Chris Ferguson had too much for Michael Ross at number 1, as did David Munro on his return to the squad in prevailing over the talented Taylor Flavell at string 4.

It was up to Scott Tulloch against Martin Ross or Greg Nicolson against Kyle Gribben to try and seal the win, but with both the Heriot-Watt boys training with the national squads, and Greg and Scott just coming off the back of the tennis season and a little out of practice it was always going to be tough! Scott managed to get a game but went down 3-1 and Greg never really got going against Kyle, going down 3-0.

Not a terrible return of points for the team, but not the start they would have wanted! Hopefully back to full strength next week and onwards and upwards!
